Lithuania is a country at the southernmost of Europe’s Baltic states, a former Soviet bloc nation bordering Poland, Latvia and Belarus. Its capital, Vilnius, near the Belarus border, is known for its medieval Old Town.

An Indo-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (IBCC) was formed in Vilnius in 2009 while an India-Lithuanian Forum was inaugurated in September 2010. Major items of import from India include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles and consumer goods. Major items of export to India include machinery and mechanical appliances, high tech optical instruments, base metals and articles of base metal, chemicals, sulphur, lime and cement.

The foundation for these cluster formations – long-term mutual co-operation in the development of new products or services and the opportunity to seize a bigger market share owing to joint effort, thus increasing the overall competitive ability of the cluster enterprises.

Most clusters form in the service sector, where the number of cluster formations is remarkably higher than in the industry sector.
